Call for Papers for the 12th Conference of the Hellenic Political Science Association

The Hellenic Political Science Association (HPSA), in collaboration with the Department of Political Science and Public Administration of the School of Economics and Political Sciences, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens; and the Department of Political Science and History, School of Political Sciences, Panteion University, will organize on Thursday, October 30th, Friday, October 31th and Saturday, November 1st, 2025, its 12th Conference, entitled: "Democracy at a Crossroads: The Crisis of Liberal Democracy and the Threat of Authoritarianism."

The theme of the Conference is broadly defined, centering mainly around:

  1. the revisionism of the Putin regime and the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine,
  2. Trump's second election in the US,
  3. the now distanced, vague, and undefined stance of the American Administration against the North Atlantic Alliance,
  4. the attack on the democratic institutions of the American Republic and freedom of speech, and on the production of scientific knowledge in universities and research centers by the Trump administration,
  5. the war, the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, and the threat of the war spreading to the Middle East,
  6. the internal dismantling of democracy and the process of European integration by forces of the extreme right and by populist-radical parties and governments in EU member states,
  7. the ongoing erosion of trust in political institutions due to political alienation and the weakening of democratic processes.

The Conference will focus on the crisis of democracy and the democratic rule of law, on the social, economic, and political interpretation of the path leading to the crisis of democratic institutions and social cohesion, on the geopolitical coordinates of this crisis, and on the dead ends and prospects of finding a solution to the crisis in the US, the European countries, and our country.

The Board of Directors of the Hellenic Political Science Association believes that a scientific conference, held at such a critical historical moment, should attempt to clearly showcase the stance and character of scientific discourse of Political Science in our country.

Accordingly, the Scientific and Organizing Committees of the Conference invite colleagues working in the field of Political Science, across the entire spectrum of its subdisciplines and interdisciplinary collaborations that constitute its subject in the broadest sense, to submit proposals for their participation in the 12th Conference of the Hellenic Political Science Association by August 20th, 2025.

Each proposal submitted should include the name and title of the presenter, the title of the paper, and an abstract comprising 300 to 500 words. The abstract should be submitted to the following web address: https://bit.ly/40SXIrI

All proposals that fall within the scope of the scientific approach to the subject of the Conference will be considered. Proposals will be subjected to a double-blind review process coordinated by the Conference Scientific Committee, based on the relevance, clarity, importance, originality, scientific character, and scientific quality of the presentation.

The names of the participants who will contribute to the Conference will be identified and announced by the 15th of September.

It is anticipated that, following a process of evaluation, a special edited volume will be published with a selection of submitted papers.

Certificates of participation will be issued.
